How It Works
A Better Model for Pre-Booking Clearance
Most agencies have been sending arrestees to the ER for clearances because there hasn’t been a better option. Blue Line Medical is that option. Here’s how it works.
The Problem
The Problem With the Current Model
Every time your agency transports an arrestee to an emergency department for a pre-booking medical clearance, you’re paying for it in ways that don’t show up on a single line item.
The Real Cost of One ER Clearance
- Hospital bill: $1,000–$8,000+ per visit
- Officer transport time: 2–6 hours out of service
- Overtime and backfill costs when shifts run long
- Inconsistent documentation that creates liability exposure
- ER staff who aren't trained for the custody environment
Multiply that by your annual booking volume. The number is significant — and most agencies have never calculated it.
The Process
How Blue Line Medical Works
01
OFFICER COMPLETES AN ELECTRONIC TRIAGE FORM
When an arrestee presents with a medical complaint, the booking or arresting officer completes a short electronic triage form documenting symptoms, complaints, and visible condition. No phone calls. No judgment calls left to chance. The form takes minutes and creates an immediate record.
02
THE SYSTEM DETERMINES THE APPROPRIATE RESPONSE
Based on triage responses, the system routes the case one of two ways: a Blue Line Medical practitioner is paged for an on-site clearance, or the individual is flagged for ER transport. The decision is driven by clinical criteria, not officer discretion — which protects your agency and ensures the right level of care every time.
03
ON-SITE CLEARANCE OR ER TRANSPORT IS EXECUTED
If routed on-site: a licensed nurse practitioner or physician is dispatched to your facility and conducts the clearance where the arrestee already is. No transport. No ER waiting room. No officer hours burned in a hospital lobby. If routed to the ER: your standard transport process proceeds — with the triage record already documented.
04
DOCUMENTATION IS GENERATED IMMEDIATELY
Every encounter — whether handled on-site or routed to the ER — generates a complete record starting with the triage form. On-site clearances additionally include provider findings, clinical assessment, and clearance determination. Your documentation chain is intact from the first officer interaction through final disposition.
05
BOOKING PROCEEDS
Your officer returns to duty. The arrestee moves through booking. The clearance is documented. For the majority of encounters handled on-site: no transport cost, no overtime spiral, no liability gap. For cases that warranted an ER visit: the triage record demonstrates your agency followed a standardized clinical protocol.
